Wow, a first place showdown this week. The Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers for three games. Who woulda thunk it? The Tigers are 36-30 and haven't exactly torn it up all season. I claim they're a far better team than the Indians who are only in first because there are so few quality teams in the major leagues this season. Cleveland will have all it can handle through the final months of the season in my book. I still think Chicago and even Minnesota, if the Twins get healthier, can all pass the Indians.
Baseball has no real good teams. Most are average if not below. The Tigers have their good moments but they stole one from Tampa Bay Monday night because the Rays just aren't that good on offense. That's why the Tigers can hardly look like a championship team most of the season with Toledo-like players but still win the division anyway.
The World Series is up for grabs. If you asked me today I'd say the Phillies and Red Sox are the best teams, but have flaws too. It's a long way to go to the playoffs. The Tigers don't have enough offense to make it to the World Series, but then again they have no reason to fear anyone else they play at this point either.
