I got an e-mail Friday from a Michigan fan reminding me that I had my doubts about how Michigan men's basketball coach John Beilein would fare during his tenure in Ann Arbor-- something along the lines of Rich Rod I was guessing. But now he's got a university committed to giving him more support and he's got new practice facilities and offices and Crisler Arena is renovated and most significantly-- he has a big time prospect he has landed for next year. Mitch McGary, an Indiana native at a New Hampshire prep school, has chosen Michigan over North Carolina and Duke and I say that's significant. The guy is 6-10 and I don't see many big men who are greats in college basketball anymore.
McGary improves Michigan's credibility in basketball-- now can he help land some more guys of high quality down the road? I don't know how good Michigan will be this season without Darius Morris who fled to the NBA draft last June. But if the new incoming freshmen can contribute right away Michigan just might even contend for the title. And it's true, I had no inkling that Beilein would get the Wolverines much better than an average team virtually every year. That may be about to change.
