Of course it's no lock-- but Grand Ledge, at 23-1, is the solid favorite to win its 20th Diamond Classic title when the 50th annual tournament begins for ten teams next Monday. Another tournament title would mean 40 per cent of the trophies over the years have gone to the Comets and coach Pat O'Keefe. Holt and Owosso are clear contenders-- and Holt plays at Grand Ledge twice Thursday for the CAAC Blue division title. I'll put Bath and Lansing Catholic as outside shots, but I doubt those teams have enough. DeWitt and Williamston have had some success this spring, but I don't label them as any kind of favorites-- Bath has some good pitchers and a 24-2 record but the Bees are stepping up in class and that's their challenge. Portland St. Pat's would pall an all time upset to win the Classic. Grand Ledge and Holt could yet meet four times this season-- they could meet for the Classic title and they are in the same district. Nothing is a lock but going into this Diamond Classic the field looks set up just the way it has been for years.
