Michigan State needs two home hockey wins this week end-- badly. The Spartans host Lake Superior State and they figure to be low scoring games-- most of them have been this season. MSU needs scoring help-- they've struggled offensively, in my judgment since Ron Mason's glory years. They were fortunate to get five out of six points against Northern Michigan over the week end-- MSU struggles on its power play but goalie Will Yanakeff was good and it counted big in a 2-1 MSU victory.
The Spartans are 12-9-1 on the season and I figure they'll be a bit above .500 when the season ends, wherever that is. They are good enough defensively, in my opinion, but their lack of firepower will hurt them in other games. When they find some prolific scorers down the road then they'll once again contend for the CCHA title.
They should have decent home crowds this week end-- it's hockey season, right? Snow is on the ground! MSU has had one home sellout so far this season and that may be it, although winning will sell some more tickets down the stretch run. I think they're headed in the right direction-- but they'll advance in my mind more quickly depending on how fast they can add some offensive firepower.
