Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers continues to earn plaudits from media everywhere, and he could be the American League's MVP and Triple Crown winner for a second consecutive year. He is very good we all know that, and he is playing these days on about one good leg.
How good is he compared with previous stars? Obviously everyone has his or her own opinions and those who did not see stars from 25 years ago probably think Cabrera is one of the best of all time. I'd love to have seen him hit against some of the former greats like Gibson, Marchial, Spahn, Koufax, etc. They used an elevated mound through 1969 before it was lowered to generate more offense in the game which the move accomplished.
I think Cabrera may well be the best hitter in today's game. Comparing eras is pure guess work of course and your guess is as good as mine. I don't think today's pitchers ever effectively go after him at the plate and if I was a manager he would see very little to hit and I'd let the other Tigers try to beat me.
