Normally Michigan State's media day for the football team in August stands by itself in importance. This year it isn't even the lead story. The Biogenesis suspensions were handed down from Major League Baseball and the Tigers have lost Jhonny Peralta, as expected, for 50 games. And many believe he will never return. His contract is up after this season.
The Tigers are losing a terrific bat and I think it hurts them. But in the Central Division it is their pitching that likely will carry them to the title and who knows how far beyond that. Why these baseball players take these drugs knowing the consequences is beyond me. And as this is written Alex Rodriguez is appealing and may well be in the Yankees' lineup Monday night in Chicago against the White Sox. Bet that will be a warm reception.
Peralta is a free agent and someone will sign him for next season because he is hitting .311 this year with 11 key home runs. He obviously has helped the Tigers to their current 64-45 record. Now we see how they fare without him with Jose Iglesias in the lineup in his place.
