Best Time of Season for the Preps

The first night of the playoffs in the state high school football tournament is great.  A number of area teams play each other, so the match ups of course are amongst the best teams.  Another Haslett vs. DeWitt game is great, and can Lansing Catholic keep its unbeaten streak alive against dangerous Olivet?  And so on...

I don't think many road teams will survive the first round.  Big road trips for Holt, Grand Ledge, Okemos and Sexton.  Catholic and Mason appear to have the edge in going the farthest, providing Mason can get past Sturgis at home.  Once the tournament begins, some teams have extensive travel against unfamiliar teams and that can lead to some mismatch games.

Mid Michigan has not had a state football champ since Grand Ledge in 2000.  Whether that trend changes this year or not remains to be seen.  I don't think this was a great year but then I never think the football in this area is the best in the state anyway.  Nor close to it.  The one and done concept is great, just like the March Madness.  Hopefully the weather cooperates through the semi-finals in mid-November.
