Ohio State thought it would get past the NCAA sanctions due in on Tuesday. Didn't exactly work out that way. For all the Buckeyes did to clean up their act following Jim Tressel's mis deeds, the NCAA came down hard, I thought, on Tuesday. A one year bowl ban won't make new head coach Urban Meyer happy. He won't have a bowl to play in now until after the 2013 season-- and that seems like a long way off. You figure Ohio State won't be able to play in next fall's Big Ten title game if it wins the Leaders Division-- is that a big break for Michigan?
Michigan closes the regular season in Columbus, a tough enough task next fall-- now the Buckeyes might have to designate their "bowl game" as beating Michigan. And the way Meyer is recruiting who knows if and when the Wolverines will beat Ohio State again-- next year or on down the line?
What a year it has been for two Big Ten heavyweights-- Ohio State and Penn State-- and if you include 2011 throw Michigan into that mix. the three top Big Ten programs in turmoil one way or another in a compact period of time.
