George Perles says it's his happiest day of the year. The first Monday in August, like today, when he hosts his Area 8 Special Olympics golf outing. It's held every year at the Country Club of Lansing and this was the 24th annual with another $60,000 due to be turned over to the cause by the end of the day. George still lands plenty of volunteers. This year including the East Lansing and Holt High School football teams.
I saw some things Monday I hadn't seen before. Lloyd Carr with a beard? Are you kidding me? He played in the outing dressed in the predictable maize and blue and he's obviously enjoying his life away from being a head coach. But he told me he's excited for Brady Hoke because that's one of his former assistant coaches.
Mark Dantonio and some of his staff members showed up for lunch. Dantonio spoke to the gathering of more than 200 players. Other MSU coaches, including baseball's Jake Boss was there. Athletic director Mark Hollis was happy with his pro am team's 23 under par 49 score at an outing last Friday at Bay Harbor near Petoskey, and his women's golf coach, Stacy Slobodnik Stoll, made a hole in one. Her second in two weeks on the same course! It's her third overall.
