It's been nearly a week since Tom Anastos was named Michigan State's new hockey coach and he's got plenty of business left in front of him before he settles in to his new digs. Anastos, 47, has yet to determine his coaching staff and he must yet meet with holdovers Tom Newton and Brian Renfrew. He has not had individual meetings yet with players, and that's on his agenda. He hopes he doesn't lose any in the off-season but he admits that could happen at any time.
Anastos is still getting CCHA office matters wrapped up. He was with interim Commissioner Fred Pletsch in Detroit early Tuesday and was heading back to East Lansing. It's a long way to the opening of practice in September and there's plenty of time. He's trying to evaluate the entire program after a 15-19-1 season. I think his first year will be a big time challenge given that he doesn't have much offensive firepower returning.
