Impressions of three stellar high school athletes I met this week:
Owen Hughes, senior, Okemos High School. He's a high jumper and he wins everything around here. He wants to compete in the 2014 OIympics and he's off to Michigan State to high jump there as a collegian. Hughes tried baseball and wasn't quick enough so he tried track next and found he talent for high jumping. He's gone 6-11 this spring and he'll be among the favorites at the state meet Saturday.
Efe Scott Emuakpor, senior, East Lansing. He's good in football, basketball and he also high jumps and is usually second to Hughes whenever they meet. Emuakpor is a football recuit and while he has no firm offers yet many are interested. He'll attend camps this summer to see how he stacks up and he could be a terrific prep receiver for the Trojans again this fall.
Brian Burt, senior, Holt. He's a golfer, best in the area. Won the district division one title Thursday at El Dorado in Mason, with an even par 71 despite making two bogeys. He loves the game and wants to make the state's Dream Team, be named Mr. Golf and win the state title a week from Saturday. He's good enough to contend. He tells me he is on his game right now and he hopes as an alternate he'll still get into the Michian Amateur this summer. Burt is off to Eastern Michigan on a golf scholarship.
All three are talented, driven and articulate. It's a key reason I like covering high school sports.
