Way to go Rick Schmidt and Dan Olsen. The mid Michigan pair had triumphant days on Wednesday. Schmidt is the 10-year athletic director at Holt High School. He was named a co winner of the 2011 Allen Bush Award by the MHSAA for meritorious service to prep sports and he is well deserving. He spent 13 years at Waverly High in various roles before taking over at Holt where the school fields 27 varsity teams. Schmidt hosts numerous MHSAA events at Holt's facilities. He'll be formally honored in the fall.
Olsen, 44, is the assistant pro this year at Walnut Hills Country Club and a 1985 East Lansing High School graduate. In Hersey, Pa., Wednesday he was among 20 who qualified to play in the PGA Championship in mid August near Atlanta. Olsen finished two under par for four rounds despite a final round 75. He'll be in the final field of 156. He told me Wednesday night driving home he made probably $8,000 for his four days work and he'll get further endorsement money from Titleist and Taylor Made for using their products. He is injury free after struggling with shoulder problems for years since his only PGA tour year, 2004.
