I walked over to McLane Stadium from Hoop Fest for a few moments between news casts on Thursday. The MSU baseball facility is due for its first home game next Friday, the beginning of a three game series against Oakland. Year two of the stadium finds the field in superb condition given that snow covered the area two weeks ago. MSU plays a doubleheader at Notre Dame Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The Spartans were 23-31 in Jake Boss' first season as head coach a year ago, but this team is off to a 9-4 start after a win earlier this week, 9-6 at Eastern Michigan. MSU has some firepower and a number of young players and it's a team that appears to have some potential. Most early season trips produce losing records, but the Spartans only have four losses to all good teams. It's been awhile since the Spartans really had a Big Ten contender and this team might not be that good yet. But the future appears bright and the recruiting class produced a number of players who are getting experience now. The first game in Cooley Law School Stadium is coming up April 7th against the Lugnuts and MSU won the game for the first time in four tries a year ago. MSU baseball seems to have a bright future with the new facilities and despite being in a cold weather climate, the field, at least, looks to be in summertime condition. |
