The women's Big Ten basketball tournament will be played this weekend in Indianapolis and the natural progression would be for the selections to be made immediately following for the NCAA tournament. That's how it works for the men and that's how it will be the following weekend, same site. The Big Ten men's title game will be played and the CBS will carry the 65-team selection show and games begin the following Thursday. But the women gain no momentum whatsoever. They are all idle until their selection show the same time as the men and so of course naturally they don't get the same publicity. If they had their own night they'd have more exposure and notoriety. If they began their tournament the week of the men's conference tournaments they'd finish before the men's Final Four and that would seemingly work better as well. Why are they played at the same time? Why do the women take so much time off with no continuity? Trying to figure out college scheduling at many different levels is always a puzzle for me and I think women's basketball would be greatly further served by a schedule move up of one week for the NCAA tournament. |
