I'm not totally surprised. Who needs the endless grief? Michigan State officials probably never heard anything positive about their logo which was leaked early and while it's been a hassle maybe it will be a blessing for them in the long run. If the so called new logo hadn't made its way to the internet and into the student newspaper then MSU would have had no feedback. And for the big unveiling of the new branding package with Nike in April the same complaints might have led to more embarrassment. I never thought much about the logo one way or the other but I sure heard about it. I was surprised it caused such an uproar but returning to the original design just keeps people from piling up with endless complaints. I wouldn't think the Nike people would care one way or another. After all they are in business with colleges to sell products and if the MSU people don't like the new Nike gear with the new logo then the products don't sell as well. Why not give people what they want? So now the new branding announcements and unveilings will come in April and no one can complain about the logo. People likely will complain about the other looks of MSU sports once the new apparel is unveiled because as I say, people tend to complain whenever they express themselves about anything and MSU fans are a vocal lot. |

I'm confused....is the "offical" MSU logo the Block " S" or the Spartan that is currently on the football helmets? Posted by: Carlo Any identity change is emotional and will generate controversy with one group of constituents or another. Identity changes are unique opportunities to generate discussion of about why the brand has changed and why it is important. If the change is for the sake of change, it will be met with more negativity because there is no strategic imperitives or facts to support why it is changing. Institutional branding and identity is more difficult to deal with because so many people are committed to the brand and have emotional ties that may date back decades. This doesn't mean you can never change it, it means you better have some good reasons. Engaging the most important constituencies in the process helps make the process smoother. This is not the same as asking permission to make changes. Spending money on research after research project will not make it easier. People don't like change and will always find fault with it. Over time they do adjust and won't recall what all the fuss was. Posted by: Dr. Bill Location: Hawaii All logos are designed to be credible in order to to have persuasion effectiveness. If MSU does't care about causing action with their logo, then leave it. But credibility based logo design represents the symbolic or non verbal communication of core competence and trustworthiness of what MSU stands for. It must also be simple and have impact for strong communication. In short, logos are communication devices not artwork per se and must be planned, designed and judged accordingly. Even traditional logos need updates by the way to better communicate the company or university today. Posted by: jan Location: mason Remember the old adage? If its not broken don't fix it. I fail to understand why anyone thinks they need to "re invent"our logo. The pride and greatness of MSUs' status are the people who represent it not a fancy new logo. That is the reason we call it Tradition. |
