MSU President Lou Anna Simon is a sports fan and loves Spartan football. She told a charity gathering Wednesday night she is solidly behind Mark Dantonio and that was after being introduced by Mark's wife, Becky Dantonio. Lou Anna will attend a meeting Friday between the Big Ten and MSU and I don't know who all will attend-- but the subject matter is replays in Big Ten football. She's not nasty in discussing the subject, but she'd like to know how the system works. This in light of MSU's replay overturn against the Spartans late in last Saturday's game at Minnesota where the Spartans would have had the ball at the Gophers' 41 yard line trailing 35-34. How contentious the meeting gets, who knows. What comes of it who knows. If it was my call the replay crew would be suspended for at least the remainder of the season and in the off season there would be new guidelines and training for all of the guys who do this. I don't think it's been clearly defined what this rule is and what it is intended to achieve. I looked at the play in question over and over again in the office Thursday and the question isn't if the play is close-- it is. But it overturned an official's call on the field and for that to happen "indisputable evidence" must be present. Clearly it is not on this play. It is the worst mis use of this rule that I've seen and the call on an out of bounds end zone play in the Iowa/Indiana game earlier Saturday was just about as bad. The Big Ten is never publicly candid about its accountability in these games, much to the frustration of fans and coaches. Whether much publicly, if anything, is said after this last weekend-- well I haven't heard anything yet but I'll be anxious to ask Lou Anna on the Tailgate Show Saturday what happened. ##### |
