The Detroit Lions make the first pick in Saturday's NFL draft from New York at 4:10pm Saturday. The first two rounds are Saturday with rounds 3 through 7 on Sunday. The Lions also pick 20th and 33rd among the early selections.
They likely will choose from one of three players-- quarterback Matt Stafford of Georgia the favorite, offensive lineman Jason Smith of Baylor or linebacker Aaron Curry of Wake Forest. The Lions say they'll likely have their choice signed by Saturday and if that's the case it may well be Stafford. The Lions are apparently afraid if he gets away and is a star they will have blown it with the public again. The is a franchise desperately in need of some credibility. And when's the last time the Lions really had a good quarterback? I don't know how good Stafford is and I don't know whether they should take him or anyone else for that matter because every year they have needs at virtually all positions but place kicker.
But this about Stafford-- where would he go among quarterbacks next year? And four good ones come to mind who will be available from Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and CMU's Dan LeFevour. Is Stafford as good as all four of those and if he is not the Lions could go away from Stafford and take a QB in the first round next year. If they don't take Stafford look for one of those four to be chosen by the Lions next year. And who makes the call for the Lions? The head coach? Lewand or Mayhew? Who does it and is that person qualified? The Lions don't tell us that information. But they've been disastrous with their picks in the past and now they can't blame it on Matt Millen anymore.
