Michigan State junior golfer Jack Newman is getting plenty of favorable publicity on Wednesday at the Masters. ESPN is televising the Par 3 tournament and while Newman finished before the 3pm air start, he fired a 3 under par 24 and has been on the leader board all day. Tim Clark's 22 was good for the early lead which included a hole in one. Newman needs confidence to play well beginning Thursday and the par 3 event had to help because of the treacherous greens.
Newman firmly believes he can make the cut. He is among five amateurs in the field of 96 players. He has to feel good about the way things have begun because he performed in front of large crowds on all nine holes. Newman tees off at 12:02pm on Thursday alongside partners Rocco Mediate and Fred Couples. Both are suited to Newman's personality and both should help him enjoy his day. Newman plays at 8:53am on Friday and he was hoping to play early on the second day for the best conditions on the greens.
I think it's a tremendous feat for him to make the Masters, the only player in history to do so with any MSU ties. He has prepared well and it should be an exciting time for him. Thursday and Friday coverage can be seen live on ESPN.
