Not all of the Thursday afternoon games are finished as I write this, but the games are close and there are some nail-biters which I'm sure we'll have throughout this tournament. Memphis, my pick in my bracket to win it all, looked shaky in an 81-70 win over Cal State Northridge. This is a win and move on tournament without style points awarded, but Memphis obviously will have to play better to get back to the Final Four. Purdue was no great shakes either, but these tournaments are made for the underdogs. Northern Iowa got within two at the end before the Boilermakers gave the Big Ten a 1-0 tournament record with a 61-56 victory.
Most of the games, except North Carolina, have been very close. Fouls and free throws will be big deals in determinining who wins and loses. I don't see Purdue getting by Connecticut if the Boilermakers get that far. As I write this Minnesota still has to play Texas today and I still don't like the Gophers nor the fact that they even made the tournament over Penn State.
I don't know if Robert Morris has enough to stay with Michigan State for awhile but all the underdogs who play tomorrow can watch the other underdogs give heavy favorites all they want on Thursday and draw hope from that. What will be the first big upset and a bracket buster? Stay tuned.
