Last year we heard that Sexton High School would close. It didn't happen. Now we hear of a massive plan to redo the Lansing city schools which would include one massive high school that would open no later than 2015. I'll believe it when I see it. Our reporters asked me all day Thursday about the possibilities.
Obviously I don't know all of the plans. But those who make such decisions for these schools are transitional-- they come and go all the time. Where will the money come from to build new buildings? I don't see radical change in the future. Some change perhaps-- everyone is going through trying times in education with the economy and what not...
But one massive high school-- doubtful. Why did the school district enter into a deal with Lansing Catholic for a new multi million dollar football facility at Eastern if it isn't needed down the road? Lansing already has two adequate football stadiums at Everett and Sexton?
These plans will draw plenty of fire and opposition from the public. I don't know how it will all work out longterm but somehow I just don't see one high school for a city the size of Lansing. We'll see. If it happens, the sports opportunity would be greatly limited for athletes because the positions on teams would be far keener to obtain.
