Northern Michigan down, bring up Lake Superior State Monday night-- I thought they only had a hockey team there. Tom Izzo's team gets another tune up before the Sunday, 6pm, November 16th regular season opener against Idaho. Both these upcoming games are in the Breslin Center. There will be a tremendous competition for playing time all season long. Because this is a quicker, more athletic team than Tom has had in the past, this MSU team might have a much better post season shot, providing some breaks go the Spartans' way over the course of a long season.
Suzy Merchant must be jinxed. She gets high scoring Aisha Jefferson back after missing all last season with an injury--now her two starting guards are injured-- Brittney Thomas and Mia Johnson. Both are out several weeks at the least. But the Spartans, when they get their key players all back, should contend for the Big Ten title in Merchant's second year.
Dan Orlovsky now says he may need surgery on his thumb-- to repair two fractures and a torn ligament. He says he may be back before the end of the season. The Lions still have not announced their quarterback for Sunday's home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but bet on newcomer Daunte Culpepper over former Spartan Drew Stanton. I think the 0-8 Lions have a great chance to cover the seven point spread, let alone win the game. Jacksonville is 3-5 with two straight losses and last week the Jaguars handed the lowly Cincinnati Bengals their first win. Culpepper will start, bet on it, because the LIons coaches have no confidence in Stanton and they need wins pronto if they have any hope of saving their jobs for next season.
