What did the Pistons have to lose? They likely would not have won the NBA title with the team they put on the court to begin this season. They may not win it with Allen Iverson but the thought here is that Iverson for Chauncey Billups is worth the risk. I like the idea that Iverson has never won a championship ring and at age 33 he has only so many years left of prime performance. It's worth the risk I believe and the Pistons certainly do get someone who will sell tickets. The Pistons, despite their 3-0 record, look like an older more tired team and Iverson might provide some spark. Whether the Pistons get past the NBA champion Celtics or not remains to be seen.
MSU fans need to root for Penn State to beat Iowa on Saturday. MSU's Rose Bowl hopes depend on a three way tie for the Big Ten title not a two way tie with Ohio State. If the Buckeyes tie MSU for the Big Ten title, they go to the Rose Bowl. If it's a three way tie with Penn State then MSU goes to Pasadena. This of course all hinges on MSU winning at Penn State November 22nd and of course that's a tall order. The MSU people are preparing behind the scenes for a more likely trip to Orlando and a New Year's Day Capital One Bowl appearance, against most likely Georgia at this point.
There are seven area high school football games in round two of the play offs, all at 7pm Friday. Three of them involve match ups of both teams from this area-- DeWitt at East Lansing, Laingsburg at Leslie and Portland at Ovid-Elsie. Other games include Jackson Lumen Christi at Onsted, Chelsea at Mason and Rockford at Grand Ledge. I like DeWitt, Leslie, Portland, Lumen Christi, Mason and Rockford from that group.
Brian Hoyer is much more valuable as a Big Ten quarterback than he gets credit. I claim if Iowa or Wisconsin had Hoyer instead of their own quarterbacks, both would have records similar to that of Michigan State. Hoyer is a lot like Bill Burke from the 1999 team which finished 10-2. Neither was thought to be a great player, but the won/lost record was sure better than MSU teams that had more heralded MSU quarterbacks.
