Michigan State plays five home hockey games in October-- when everyone is thinking about hockey right?  The Spartans play one home game in December and two in January when no one is thinking about hockey right?  And MSU gets a bye week end in January which makes more sense than playing games in early October right?  I'm obviously missing something when it comes to college hockey scheduling.

The Tigers have a new pitching coach.  Rick Knapp spent the past 12 years as the minor league pitching coordinator for the Minnesota Twins.  He replaces Chuck Hernandez who was fired.

It will cost you more to go to the Super Bowl and sit in the best seats next February in Tampa.  The NFL says 25 per cent of the seats will carry a $1,000 per ticket face value.  It's something the Detroit Lions won't have to worry about.

The Lions are 9 1/2 point underdogs at the Houston Texans on Sunday.  That seems like a lot to me.  Now that quarterback Dan Orlovsky will no longer be looking over his shoulder at Jon Kitna maybe he can relax and score more than the one touchdown the Lions produced last Sunday at Minnesota.  Somehow I'll bet the Lions cover 9 1/2 points.  Houston is a mere 1-4.  The Lions should be more relaxed now that they're not playing for much.  Kick off is at 4pm.

Preparing for next week's MSU vs. Michigan game:  The Wolverines have had only three seven loss seasons since they began the sport in 1879.  If Michigan loses at Penn State the Wolverines will be 2-5, three losses away from their worst record in school history.  And they'll still have games with the likes of MSU, Ohio State and road games at Purdue and Minnesota.  They'll also have a home game with Northwestern.  Michigan has not had a losing season since 1967 and the Wolverines almost have to beat State to keep that streak alive.  Michigan has played in 33 straight bowl games, by seven currently the nation's longest streak.  The Wolverines have won six straight over MSU and 30 of the last 38.  Michigan could end up, in the 2008 calendar year, with its most losses in football and men's basketball, all in the same calendar year.  Michigan's 10-22 basketball record from last March was the most losses recorded in one season in school history by rookie coach John Beilein.  He and Rich Rodriguez were both picked off from West Virginia and you wonder what those fans must think about how their former coaches are faring at the bigger more prestigious school.
