ARE TIGERS OUT OF IT... OR NOT?

The Tigers will be back home Friday for a week end series against the Oakland A's and it will start a 20 home games in 26 games stretch.  That could be significant.  The Tigers have issues as everyone knows.  But the fact is they should do better at home and the fact also is that neither Minnesota nor Chicago seem capable of pulling away from many other teams.  So for the Tigers the beat goes on looking for answers to salvage something from a very frustrating season.  For certain it seems like the Tigers will make plenty of changes before next April.

Michigan State's football team will hardly have a glamorous trip to the West Coast for the California game August 30th.  While other boosters will arrive in Berkley a couple of days early to sight see, the Spartans, like any other game, will fly out Friday and return home immediately after the game.  It should be a quiet plane ride home, win or lose, because the team will be flying through the night back to East Lansing.

Early observations of the PGA Championship-- the scores Sunday will be high given the pressure and the difficulty of the course.  The four par 3s are monsters and all very long.  The fairways are narrow and the rough high.  The 18th finishing hole plays as a par five for the members and it is an arduous par four in this tournament.  If the leader needs a par on the 72nd hole Sunday it absolutely won't be a done deal.  That's providing a par is needed on the 238-yard uphill par three 17th and that's a very difficult hole also.  It's all why Ben Hogan called Oakland Hills South "the Monster" many years ago.

High school football practice begins on Monday.  Full coverage during the next three weeks on channel ten and our first Sports Blitz will be Thursday, August 28th, because that's the night of the opening games since is is Labor Day week end.  The premier opening games find Holt at Sexton and East Lansing at Haslett.  Holt debuts new head coach Al Slamer and Charlotte returns former head coach Eddie Ostipow and the Orioles haven't done much winning since he left several years ago.
