Playing in the NBA hasn't been easy for Michigan State's Shannon Brown.  The Chicago native signed Wednesday a one year deal with the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, to play for new head coach Larry Brown.   Shannon has struggled to find time at both Cleveland and Chicago but the Bobcats aren't very good, so maybe he'll get a better chance with this team.

The current MSU team hopes that incoming freshman forward Delvon Roe will be okay with his latest knee issue-- the surgery on his left knee by MSU Dr. Mike Shingles on Tuesday apparently went well.  But six more weeks of rehab means he won't be playing and when he begins on October 15th in earnest, who knows how far behind he'll be.  For the Spartans to have a Final Four run to Ford Field next April, guys like Roe have to make big contributions right away.  Will his knees hold up?  I guess we'll find out down the road.

The Tigers have 50 games left and at 55-57 through Tuesday it's amazing they're a mere  7 games out of their divisional lead.  Minnesota and Chicago are ahead, but they still look shaky to me.  I doubt the Tigers can mount a charge, but they do have 20 home games coming up out of 26 and that should give them some relief.  In Tuesday night's 14-inning loss, bullpen pitchers Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya actually looked good at times, certainly better than they've been throwing.  If they'd thrown like that all summer things wouldn't be as tough.  But who knows if either can consistently pitch well when it counts from here on out.

Does it matter if the Lions beat the New York Giants Thursday night at Ford Field?  Obvioulsy these games have no stake in the standings but the Lions might want to have a good feel of beating the Super Bowl champions.  The Lions open the regular season September 7th at Atlanta.

High school football practice begins Monday.  Opening games are Thursday August 28th.  Key opening games find Sexton against Holt and East Lansing at Haslett.  Sexton and Everett, two city public schools, may well be the best teams in the area.  Food for thought with another high school season soon to get under way.
