Former Spartan hockey star Mike York has bounced around the NHL over the years-- and he'll still be around next season. York, after playing with the Phoenix Coyotes last season has signed a one year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
MSU football fans can remember several key catches in the 2006 game under the lights and rain in Spartan Stadium made by Notre Dame tight end Jeff Samardzija. The Irish rallied miraculously to win that night 40-37. Samardzija, from nearby Valparaiso, Indiana, is also a good baseball player and signed a $10 million contract to join the Cubs two years ago. He worked his way up from the Midwest League class A Cubs' affiliate, Peoria, to this year pitching at Triple A Iowa. Friday, the parent Cubs called Samardzija up to relief pitch in place of Kerry Wood, who is going on the disabled list. Samardzija had a 4-1 record in six starts at Iowa.
The new Michigan football TV show will be known as Inside Michigan Football with Rich Rodriguez. Jim Brandstatter, after 29 years with Michigan Replay, will stay on as host. The show will air at 6:30pm Thursdays on Fox Sports Detroit and at midnight Friday on WYZ TV in Detroit. Rodriguez did not want to do a Saturday night taping of a post game show because he spends his time then with his eight and 12-year old kids and with recruits when necessary.
All 15 members of the MSU women's basketball team spent this summer on campus playing pick up games and lifting weights. Allyssa DeHaan, ready for her junior year, told me she never lifted in high school and can't believe how much stronger she now feels. DeHaan says she'll either play in the WNBA, or be a pediatrician or try to do both at the same time. She is taking two classes this summer and says she doubts she'd ever have been in a fight like we saw at the Palace in the WNBA this past Tuesday.
