Former DeWitt High School golfer Stephany Fleet is pretty good.  She's done well at Eastern Michigan University and she is two wins away from winning the 92nd Michigan Women's Amateur championship being played this week at Walnut Hills Country Club in East Lansing.  Fleet won two matches Thursday, including an afternoon 3-2 quarter-final victory over MSU women's coach Stacy Slobodnik Stoll.  Fleet seems clearly capable of winning two matches tomorrow and winning the biggest event of her career.

Maybe she'll become the next Paula Creamer.  The current budding LPGA star had a pretty good day Thursday in the opening round of the LPGA's Jamie Farr Classic in Sylvania, Ohio, near Toledo.  Creamer birdied nine of ther final 11 holes for an 11 under par 60.  The round included a tour record 27 on the front nine and she missed the LPGA 18-hole record of Annika Sorenstam by one shot.

I wonder if Nick Saban would have had a better chance at winning more games playing in the Big Ten at Michigan State than he'll have playing an SEC schedule at Alabama?  The Tide have a rugged road schedule this fall-- they have three cream puff teams out of the 12 they'll face and it won't be easy in the opener August 30th against Clemson in Atlanta.  Nick's first Tide team went 7-6 and won the Independence Bowl.  He'll get better players, but the SEC schedule he'll face each season will be murderous.  Maybe at Michigan State he would have recruited enough good players to put together better records.  Nick's last season at MSU was in 1999 when the Spartans finished 10-2 and won the Citrus Bowl over Florida.

Charlie Otlewski begins his 14th season as Haslett High School's football coach this fall.  His former star quarterback Nathan Turner is enrolled at LCC after leaving Western Michigan where he played as a walk on for a year.  Turner will serve as an assistant coach in the Haslett program this year.  Otlewski will take two weeks off for a fishing trip to Alaska with three buddies before formal practice begins on August 11th.  The Vikings open at home Thursday, August 28th against East Lansing.  Haslett does not have an established quarterback heading into August, unusual for an Otlewski coached team.
