How many awards can the guy win? Now he has just been named first team academic All American. He will be the captain this fall in his senior year. Lerg is the sixth MSU player ever to be named first team academic and regular All American in the same season.
Boston College's Jerry York and Denver's George Gwozdecky are among the speakers for the Ron Mason Tribute dinner Thursday at the Kellogg Center. The program looks long-- Simon, Izzo, Hollis are all speaking along with a board of trustees member and there is even a live music presentation on the rundown. But it should be an enjoyable evening for a 29-year veteran with an extraordinary career. Call the Ralph Young Fund office if you wish to attend.
The Tigers have farmed struggling starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to Lakeland, their class A affiliate. They believe he'll get more coaching help there and if you watched him start Monday's game against the Cleveland Indians, you could readily tell Willis needs help. He walked five in 1 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs. The Tigers may rue the day they traded for Willis and gave him a guaranteed three year $29 million salary. Eddie Bonine, 9-2 at Toledo, likely will be called up to replace Willis in the starting rotation and his debut likely will come at Comerica Park this week end against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The MSU board of trustees has two sports items on its regular meeting this Friday. The players lounge at the Duffy Daugherty Building apparently will be named after Henry Bullough; and approval likely will be granted for further renovation to Old College Field for softball and baseball upgrades.
I was checking MSU's baseball past recently-- just think MSU has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1979 and only made the College World Series field in 1954. And the Spartans have had one first team All American in the past 30 years-- outfielder Bob Malek in 2002. Before Malek, Kirk Gibson earned the distinction in 1978.
