Michigan State has named senior to be Jeff Lerg as captain for next season, the first time a goalie at MSU has been so honored. Lerg was assistant captain last season. MSU coach Rick Comley says Lerg must forget about the extra duties during games since he'll have enough on his mind, but off the ice his leadership can be a key. Tim Kennedy was named an assistant captain, but of course he may well leave during the summer for a contract with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres which is considered likely.
The Big Ten baseball tournament begins Wednesday in Ann Arbor with two games. Michigan is the regular season champ with a 42-12 season record and the overwhelming favorite to win the tournament. Let's face it Michigan is the only Big Ten team of any quality-- the rest have mediocre season records. This is double elimination so Michigan should win and move on to a prime position in the NCAA tournament.
The Red Wings Stanley Cup finals series with the Pittsburgh Penguins should be a decent television watch with viewing numbers better than previous years. Both teams are red hot with star players and Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh is arguably the best player in the game. It all begins Saturday night in Detroit. The Red Wings hopes, I believe, rest in large measure to the return of Johan Franzen who is still having headache problems and is not cleared to play after suffering concussion like symptoms.
Advice to Lowell High School quarterback Keith Nichol-- transfer where you think you have the best chance to play. Whether that's MSU or anywhere else and he says he has eight schools in the running, I'd pick the school with the best chance to play. That was not the case, pure and simple, at Oklahoma. I don't know how good Nichol is, but he obviously wasn't good enough to beat out stellar redshirt freshman Sam Bradford last fall with the Sooners. Nichol wants a decision by the first of June so he can enroll in another school and be ready after sitting out the 2008 season per NCAA transfer rules.
