The NFL draft takes center stage around here this week end. Start time is 3pm on ESPN Saturday and thankfull the time between selections has been shortened from 15 minutes to ten. Michigan State's Devin Thomas likely will be chosen around the 5 o'clock hour and the Detroit Lions' 15th over all pick likely will come shortly after that. The first bit of mystery comes with the second pick from the St. Louis Rams, since Jake Long has already signed with the Miami Dolphins.
Michigan State and Iowa play a 1pm doubleheader in Olds Park. The crowd could be significantly smaller than the record 12,862 on hand Thursday night for the game with the Lugnuts. The big lures there, let's face it, were the great weather and $2 beers on thirsty Thursday. Reports tell me it was a zoo in centerfield with people roaming around and pretending to be at a party with little clue that a baseball game was being played at the same time. Playing the Crosstown Showdown on a Thursday, however, lure many MSU students to Olds Park-- it's in advance of final exams studies and if the weather is good it's a great night to party. The $2 beers are the big key though.
Two of high school baseball's best collide at 11am in a doubleheader-- Mount Pleasant at Grand Ledge. Both are highly ranked and Grand Ledge is 9-1 after sweeping league rival Okemos on Thursday. MSU softball is home in the afternoon against mighty Michigan.
And the Big Ten men's golf championships run all day at Forest Akers West Course. The five man teams play 18 holes Saturday and Sunday after opening with 36 holes on Friday. Michigan State is defending champion and Spartan senior Ryan Brehm will have a great chance to win the individual title.
On TV, hi def, 3pm Saturday, game two between the Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche from Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings opened with a 4-3 win on Thursday. The Wings beat Colorado all four games during the regular season. Former Spartan John-Michael Liles is now in his fifth year with the Avs and he scored a goal in game one.
