Michigan State and North Carolina will play in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge this next season-- Wednesday, December 3rd at Ford Field. Game time to be announced but bet on it that national television will be a key. Michigan plays at Maryland the same night. The Spartans have a 5-3 Big Ten/ACC Challenge record and who knows if they'll face many of the Carolina players from this past season. National player of the year Tyler Hansbrough has not yet determined whether he will leave school early to enter the NBA draft. Michigan State last played North Carolina in Winston-Salem in the NCAA tournament's second round game in 2007 and lost 81-67.
The Final Four will be held next April at Ford Field so obviously the venue provides an opportunity for players on both sides to get a look at the surroundings. Who knows if either or both will be there next spring, but for sure they'll get to play in front of a big crowd come December.
DeWitt High School golfer Liz Nagel has verbally committed to play at Michigan State. She is a two time state champion and still has her senior season to play this fall. Nagel may well be the finest female golfer ever to come out of this area and if she continues to improve she can legitimately dream of trying to become a pro one day.
The NFL's Miami Dolphins are already negotiating with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long. The Dolphins have the first pick in the April 26th draft and by rule, teams with the first pick can negotiate ahead of the drawing. Whether the two sides will come to agreement or not remains to be seen.
Pat O'Keefe is under way with his 40th year as head baseball coach at Grand Ledge High School. As usual he has a good team. He used a junior and a sophomore to start a season opening doubleheader Monday at DeWitt, a quality program for sure and the Comets won 11-2 and 3-1. Young pitchers come along fast in the Grand Ledge system, or so it seems every spring. O'Keefe has taken his teams to Florida for spring training for each of the past 32 years.
