East Lansing and Portland have combined to go 50-1 in girls high school basketball this season and both of them are in the semi finals Friday of the state high school championships in Ypsilanti. Portland, 26-0, has the tougher test perhaps, against 24-0 Detroit Community, in class B. Community knocked out Waverly, 61-38 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Portland is making its first semi-final appearnace in the past 35 years. The Raiders are fresh from a 51-32 quarter-final win over once beaten Ludington. Game time Friday is 6pm.
As for East Lansing, the top ranked Trojans survived a brutally tough quarter-final against Grand Haven, 45-44. East Lansing is now 24-1 and perhaps a more manageable semi final against 21-5 Saginaw Arthur Hill, although that team is very good nonetheless. East Lansing plays at 1pm Friday.
Joey Harrington is now oh for three with NFL teams. He was let go by the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday after starting ten games for the Falcons at quarterback last season. Harrington, essentially an NFL bust since his Oregon days in college, has also played for the Lions and the Miami Dolphins. But playing in the NFL has been a struggle for him.
Projecting ahead to the men's Big Ten basketball tournament-- Michigan State may play Ohio State in back to back games-- Sunday at Columbus to end the regular season, and then in a 4-5 seed match up next Friday at 2:30pm in Indianapolis in a quarter-final game of the tournament. If the Spartans win, they'd likely meet Wisconsin in the semi finals and perhaps Purdue in the finals. Purdue likely would play Indiana in the Saturday semi finals if the seeds play out without upsets.
