DeWitt and St. Johns are the two area high school gyms where intriguing match ups will be played in district semi finals of the boys state high school basketball tournament on Wednesday. In Class B at DeWitt, the Panthers face rugged Lansing Catholic. That game is a toss up and could go either way and I guess I'll take DeWitt by a couple of points simply because of the home floor advantage. Waverly should beat Stockbridge in the second game to set up a good final on Friday night.
In Class A in St. Johns, Eastern faces East Lansing and Sexton plays Okemos. The winners square off Friday for the title, same time. Sexton is 18-2 and is on a roll. The Big Reds have too much for Okemos, a team with a 13-8 record. Eastern is dangerous to anyone who plays the Quakers, despite their 10-10 record. Eastern has won four in a row and is clearly improved from the start of the year. I think Eastern will beat East Lansing in a close game then lose a close game to Sexton. The Big Reds beat Eastern by one point early in the season at Sexton's gym.
The Red Wings still have the best record in the NHL despite a 1-7-1 record in their last nine games. They acquired 8-year NHL defenseman Brad Stuart from the Los Angeles Kings just prior to Wednesday's trade deadline. The Wings gave up two draft picks in return. Detroit was to play at Edmonton Wednesday night. WIthin two weeks, veteran Darren McCarty should be called up from the Grand Rapids farm team to add further help on defense.
Tough nights on Monday for several good area teams-- Holt lost both its boys basketball and hockey teams in the state tournament on opening night. Holt's hockey team was stunned 6-1 by Okemos. The Rams' basketball team lost five of its last six games en route to a 14-7 season. And DeWitt/St. Johns' hockey team had a terrific year but lost 4-3 at Forest Hills Northern Monday, a rough way to end the season and so quickly at that.
