BIG TEN NETWORK'S FUTURE?

MSU athletic director Mark Hollis told me today school officials are concerned with the future of the Big Ten Network and its ability to provide coverage for the vast audience of Spartan fans across the state.  School officials are monitoring the Network's progress closely in negotiations with Comcast and other cable systems which currently do not carry it.  Hollis admits that MSU "is only one eleventh of the Big Ten" but he is hoping somehow, some way agreements will be worked out soon.

The CAAC high school hockey showcase is a great idea for the promotion of the sport at the prep level.  All ten CAAC teams will play league games beginning at 10am Saturday at Suburban Ice East Lansing.  There will be kids games in between the games and skills competitions all day long.  Free popcorn is available and kids are under 18 will be admitted free.  This is the second annual showcase event.  DeWitt/St. Johns is the top team in the standings, but Grand Ledge/Waverly, Lansing Catholic and Jackson Lumen Christi all still have hopes for at least a share of the title.

Michigan's hockey success this season is amazing.  The Wolverines have won nine in a row en route to their current 22-2 record.  They have played Michigan State 265 times and have a narrow lead in the series and only the Minnesota vs. North Dakota series has produced more games in a rivalry and they've played each other 269 times.  The game in Yost will be wild Friday night, so will the return match at Munn Arena which should be sold out by face off at 7:30pm Saturday.  MSU coach Rick Comley knows his team must get at least a split to keep CCHA title hopes alive.
