It's a Michigan vs. Michigan State week end coming up. But my how different the competition will be. Michigan is ranked number one in the nation in hockey and number two million in men's basketball. The Wolverine basketballers have a rough week-- national TV appearances at Wisconsin (Tuesday) and at Michigan State on CBS, Sunday at 1pm. Ugh! How many more games do you think Michigan is going to win beyond the current five? To me it doesn't look like many.
Only one Michigan men's basketball team has ever lost 20 games in a season-- the 1959-60 team went 4-20. The current Michigan team is 5-13 heading into the Wisconsin game and I'm projecting no more than two more wins this season, plus an opening loss in the Big Ten tournament. That figures out to about a 7-24 final record which would easily be the worst record in school history, dating back to the first team in 1908-09 which went 1-4 and didn't play again for nine years.
I don't see Tom Izzo burying Michigan in the Breslin Center Sunday, but he will demand good defense, therefore the Wolverines will have all they can handle scoring 50 points. The crowd will be roaring and the Izzone will be merciless on a program that actually fashioned a 22-13 record last season and got Tommy Amaker fired. Such a record would be welcome relief at this point. You wonder how first year coach John Beilein is ever going to dig out of the mess the program is currently in. And just think Michigan had Northwestern down by 26 points on the road a couple of weeks ago before winning by ten. Just how bad is Northwestern? And the Wildcats get the Spartans Thursday and even though Michigan State sometimes gets down and dirty at Northwestern, this one should be a breeze coming up on Thursday night.
