TWO GREAT HIGH SCHOOL EVENTS!

Usually it's the big sports like football and basketball that get most of the high school media attention.  But wrestling and hockey had two terrific events Wednesday night in the area.  Holt hosted Mason in wrestling, the first time in 26 years to the two virtual powers collided on the mat.  Mason's 15-0 lead evaported in a 37-30 Holt victory.  Holt is ranked third in the state in division one and Mason is top ranked in division two.  Either one could win a state title as a team or have individuals win championships.

And at The Summit, the stands were jammed for the Grand Ledge/Waverly vs. DeWitt/St. Johns game.  Both teams sit atop the CAAC standings, although Lansing Catholic and Jackson Lumen Christi still hope to compete for the title down the stretch.  This was a terrific game that ended in a 2-2 tie with the building rocking with noise throughout.  If high school hockey was played on nights other than Friday, crowds would increase dramatically.  As it is the crowds are pretty good any way on the other nights games are played, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  The entire league will be exposed during a five game showcase event a week from Saturday at Suburban Ice East Lansing.  Many other activities are planned along with the league games themselves.

As much as I gripe about the college sports schedules making little sense I have an exception-- Michigan vs. MSU in hockey.  The teams haven't met yet this season and both are ranked in the top six of the national polls.  They have four meetings coming up beginning next week end and that's great because now we're in the heart of hockey season and the fans should enjoy all of the meetings.  Last year the games were played in the fall when most fans were still watching and concentrating on football.
