Scott Schafer is the new defensive coordinator for Rich Rodguez at Michigan-- the announcement was made Friday afternoon. Schafer coached with the same title this last season at Stanford. Rodriguez' staff is now complete with only one Lloyd Carr holdover-- Fred Jackson. Michigan is still looking for about eight more verbal commitments before the Feb. 6th signing day.
Michigan State will have plenty of football recruits on campus this week end and next. Mark Dantonio has 16 verbal commitments and is looking for nine more. He says he has hit some home runs with some of the verbals his staff has already lined up, even though most of the recruiting services don't rank the Spartans prominently among the other Big Ten schools.
Medical updates-- MSU p. a. announcer Jerry Marshall back at Sparrow because of lingering problems from a stroke nearly three months ago. He cannot speak and has been at the long term care facility at St. Lawrence. Former MSU broadcaster Jim Adams still at the Dobie Road extended care facility in Okemos after being injured in a fall this past fall. And WKAR's Earle Robinson undergoes surgery next week for prostate cancer and is expected to miss at least two appearances on Sunday Staudt on Sports shows. Jeremy Sampson will fill in as co host while Robinson is away.
The Purdue football story is a bit weird. Joe Tiller retires after the 2008 season, which will be his 13th. But his replacement was named Friday, 49 year old Dan Hope, who has been head coach at Eastern Kentucky. Hope will be on Purdue's staff this coming season. He is a former Purdue and Wyoming assistant under Tiller. He gets a contract through 2013 after next season ends.
