It's off to Orlando Sunday morning after the Staudt on Sports television show at 11am-- first things first right? That show will feature the MSU basketball game against Texas set for 6:30pm Saturday from the Palace. By the way they haven't sold all the tickets yet and it's a doubleheader with Oakland playing Oregon in the second game.
The team leaves on two charter flights at 9am Saturday from Lansing. I leave Sunday and coverage from Orlando begins Wednesday after a couple of days in the Sarasota area with family and friends. The half hour preview show is set for 7:30pm Thursday from Orlando, "Road to Orlando"-- best title we could think up! Jeremy Sampson anchors from our WILX studios and I'll report back from the warmer site. Kick off is at 5pm on Friday and the Spartans have sold about 9,000 tickets-- they hoped to sell 12,000. Maybe they'll sell more next week.
Jeremy just signed a new three year contract with WILX and that's good news for me-- he's as good as I've had to work with in 37 years on the air around here. He does the work of two people. He'll anchor the Staudt on Sports radio shows next week, but of course we're off on Tuesday for Christmas. I'll report in from Florida. Jeremy travels with basketball during the NCAA tournament.
I remember the last football game I covered in Orlando-- hard to believe it's been nearly eight years since the Citrus Bowl-- MSU vs. Florida on New Year's Day, the new millenium. A beautiful day and a terrific opening game for new coach Bobby Williams. MSU won 37-34 and beat Steve Spurrier, although that was not his best Gators team. Orlando is great, but it's crowded at this time of year and Disney is always crowded around the holidays. But it beats the cold weather.
Happy Holidays to all of you-- thanks for your loyalty. Talk to you from Orlando.
