NOTES FROM A DAY OF RADIO AT THE BRESLIN CENTER

Thursday's Staudt on Sports radio show was spent at the Breslin Center hosting the annual Meijer's Holiday Hoops news conference presentation.  Twelve schools were represented.  Six high school games will be played, all boys, December 27th at the Breslin with all proceeds again going to the Children's Miracle Network at Sparrow Hospital.  More than $30,000 was raised last year.  DeWitt and Fowlerville get things going at 11am.  Since girls play in the same season now I'm assuming down the road girls games will be included in the format.

Notes from visitors on the air:

MSU baseball coach David Grewe and his wife Annie are the parents of a brand new son, Charlie, born last week.  Grewe begins his third MSU season on Feb. 22nd when the Spartans open in Florida against Stetson.  For the first time, all NCAA division one baseball teams start on the same date, February 22nd this time.  MSU will play 55 games, including 32 in the Big Ten, eight four game series.  In 2009, the Big Ten format will be eight three game series so as to improve records with better pitchers getting more work.   Remember, Big Ten baseball has ten teams, Wisconsin gave up the sport years ago.  No Big Ten team has played in the College World Series since back to back Michigan appearances in 1983-84.

MSU hockey coach Rick Comley says this is the final season for over time ties.  In the 2008-09 season, the same four on four overtime format will be used followed by a shoot out.  MSU plays home and home games this week end with Ferris State then breaks until the annual GLI Tournament in Detroit at the end of the month.  MSU is ranked fifth with a 10-3-2 record.  Comley has made several hospital visits to veteran PA announcer Jerry Marshall and is disappointed to see Jerry's physical struggles.  He cannot speak and he suffered his stroke five weeks ago.

MSU men's basketball coach Tom Izzo thinks Goran Suton is a huge key to his team's future this season.  His Spartans depart Friday morning for Salt Lake City and Saturday's 4pm game against rugged Brigham Young.  Former MSU coach Jud Heathcote will be in attendance after earlier attending the UCLA game in Kansas City.  MSU is 7-1 on the season and the game will be televised on Versus.
