MICHIGAN STATE'S BOWL SITUATION

As of Tuesday afternoon, here's how I see MSU and its bowl situation:

You won't know anything until the BCS pairings show on Sunday, December 2nd.  The way has now been cleared for Illinois to be chosen as a Big Ten at large team.  If that happens, then Michigan State could vault Penn State and be chosen for the December 28th Champps Sports Bowl in Orlando-- clearly where the Spartans would like to play.  They would face an ACC at large team, someone like Georgia Tech, Boston College, Florida State, etc.  This is Michigan State's first choice and the win over Penn State might help State get the nod over the Nittany Lions despite Penn State's 8-4 record to MSU's 7-5.  If Illinois is passed over by the BCS, then State likely faces a 6-6 Big 12 team in Tempe, Arizona at 6pm New Year's Eve. That game is only being carried by the NFL Network.  Indiana is the only other realistic possibility for the game in Tempe and if the Hoosiers are chosen there, because they haven't played in a bowl in 14 years, then State would end up in the Motor City Bowl, Dec. 26th, probably against Central Michigan.

Michigan's coaching change-- I see Les Miles as the replacement, probably to be named after the Southeastern Conference championship game December 1st and before Christmas.  If it doesn't work out for the LSU coach and I don't see that as a problem for Michigan, then I'd say the next best guess is Kirk Ferentz at Iowa and then maybe someone like Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia.  In no way do I see Michigan promoting a present assistant nor do I see Cincinnati's Brian Kelly in the mix either.  And the new coach inherits a team that likely won't be a pre season top three Big Ten pick next fall.  The order likely will be Ohio State, Illinois, Wisconsin and then after that Michigan will fight with Penn State, Michigan State, Iowa and maybe Indiana or Purdue for the next spots.  Northwestern and Minnesota again will try to avoid the basement.
