If only all of college basketball could be like the semi-finals of the CBE Classic next week in Kansas City. ESPNU gets the first night and ESEPN2 gets the championship game on Tuesday. Michigan State faces Missouri at 9:30pm Monday after the opening semi-final of second ranked UCLA vs. Maryland. There is also a consolation game on Tuesday. The Spartans then return home a week from Saturday during the holiday week end to face Oakland University at 4:30pm. It's another homecoming for Lansing area players who play for the Golden Grizzlies like Johnathon Jones, Derrick Nelson, etc.
John Hueser of the Ann Arbor News tells me he is convinced Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is retiring. He doesn't know the time table when I asked about that and he is betting that LSU's Les Miles is Carr's replacement. There is plenty of drama coming in Michigan football beyond this Saturday's regular season ending game against Ohio State.
By the way if you missed it, check out one of the many reruns of HBO's documentary about the Ohio State/Michigan football series. Like all other HBO work, it is very well done. It favors neither school, although there is more Ohio State video, perhaps because more was available. It was strange that Lloyd Carr doesn't get mentioned during the hour while current OSU coach Jim Tressel is interviewed briefly. It is eerie to watch Bo Schembechler interviewed-- the session took place 12 hours before he died. But if you like Big Ten football, this is a must see. In watching it, I understand even more fully why these schools dominate in the sport each year in the league because of the massive commitment and devotion toward winning each has.
The combined record of the four opponents the mid Michigan high school football teams will play in the semi finals this Saturday is 45-2. Only Orchard Lake St. Mary, at 9-2, has a loss this season. Orchard Lake St. Mary faces East Lansing at 1pm at South Lyon. East Lansing is 9-3 but has won eight in a row.
