SO WHO MIGHT WIN SATURDAY FROM THE LOCAL PREP TEAMS?

Four mid Michigan teams-- Leslie, Jackson Lumen Christi, Fulton and East Lansing, all play semi-final football games this Saturday.  Leslie has the toughest road-- against 12-0 Blissfield at 1pm at Hillsdale College in division six.  East Lansing has a toughie at South Lyon against Orchard Lake St. Mary's.  East Lansing, now 9-3, has already knocked off unbeatens DeWitt and Chelsea in division three at their home stadiums.  East Lansing has won eight in a row and is playing very well on offense.

The winners all move on to Ford Field for championship games on Thanksgiving week end and all of the games will be televised live on Fox Detroit.

If Michigan State can find some defensive players, next year could move them solidly into the first division in Big Ten football.  I think the Spartans will continue to improve on offense and in their kicking game.  If they can control some teams defensively, who knows how much more they can improve.  They have to open at California, not easy, but they can manage many games on their schedule next fall.  They play at Michigan and Penn State, not easy either and they get Ohio State, Iowa and Purdue at home among others.  Who knows what Notre Dame will bring to Spartan Stadium next fall as well.  I figure State is a good bet to beat Penn State this Saturday, but just when the Spartans seem to be ready for a roll they stumble.

As for the Detroit Lions, if they are really a play off calibre team they should win both of their next home games even though the opponents are good.  They can beat the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day.  A split to me isn't all that noteworthy.  A sweep is.  They are better at home than they are on the road and again, if they want to display that they are significantly better and play off worthy they need two home wins.  I'd advise them overtaking Green Bay because they need home play off games.  Road games in the play offs are very dangerous.
