I teased the channel ten soccer guru Jeremy Sampson today.  Michigan State won a game and just missed playing in the finals of the Big Ten men's tournament being held this week end in East Lansing-- without ever scoring a goal in regulation.  The Spartans won a shootout against Penn State in the quarter-finals and then later on Friday afternoon, top seed Indiana knocked out MSU 1-0.  Michigan State still hopes to make the NCAA tournament.  The Big Ten men's final is at 2pm Sunday between the Hoosiers and Ohio State.

Best chances among the area six high school teams to make next Saturday's semi finals:  Probably Holt, Jackson Lumen Christi and Fulton.  East Lansing, Leslie and Sexton are all underdogs.

Next week is Michigan/Ohio State week and it makes no sense to play the game at noon.  The game for the title, in my mind, should come at 3:30pm after everyone else has finished up then from noon kick offs.  Michigan State hosts Penn State but I'll be there are plenty of late arrivals from people waiting to see who wins in Ann Arbor, just as will be the case at other Big Ten stadiums.

How can Miami of Ohio be ranked number one in the nation in ice hockey?  It doesn't make sense and I'll bet the best players are not on that roster.  Nonetheless, Miami plays at Michigan State next Thursday and Friday.  The Spartans likely will have beaten Mercyhurst twice this week end to carry an 8-1 record and an eight game winning streak into that early showdown series.

The Tigers may offer 43-year old pitcher Kenny Rogers $8 million to return next season.  I say that's a mistake.  Break that money down and get two other pitchers who are on their way up.  Rogers is too big a risk in terms of his health in my judgment.

To those who e-mail us complaining about not enough channel ten coverage of Holt and East Lansing football.  My advice is to go ask the head coaches of those schools-- Mike Smith and Bill Feraco-- how they think the coverage has been.  Those who would complain simply do not watch or listen even though they say they do.  Some of what they complain about is silly.
