HART MUST BE GIGGLING TO HIMSELF THESE DAYS

Michael Hart is a talker-- he's been that way his entire football career.  The brilliant senior running back guaranteed a Michigan win over Notre Dame after the Wolverines' fell to 0-2 earlier this season.  And he had a smile on his face.  Everything with him his upbeat Michigan and that's part of his shtick.  So it came as no surprise to me that he was talking after Michigan's comeback win over the Spartans last Saturday night.  And MSU's guys took the bait.

What does Hart care what anyone at MSU thinks about him?  He's gone.  He went 4-0 against MSU and he'll never see the Spartans again.  Sure he had to be worried and his comments about little brother are just talk and nothing more, part of any rivalry match up in football.  Michigan State's people, in my estimation, should waste any time considering repercussions against Hart or Michigan other than to try and play more effectively next fall in Ann Arbor.  This isn't a game about revenge it's about who can play well enough to win.  And Michigan has done it 30 of the past 38 years.  Michigan State, in my judgment, needs to worry less about the cheap talk and concentrate more on simply having all the players perform at their best.  If they can do that they get the best chance to win.  And when you win that shuts the other guys up.  Just ask Ohio State about how much Hart and the Wolverines have spoken after games with the Buckeyes the past few years.

Michigan State needs to forget all the bad moments of the past few weeks and concentrate solely on playing at its highest level against Purdue and Penn State.  The Spartans can win both games or they might lose them with any distractions.  A 7-5 record is not a disaster by any means, but a 5-7 mark shows scant progress over 4-8 of a year ago.  And both teams would be 1-7 in the Big Ten.  When a team has lost 18 of its last 21 Big Ten games, as the Spartans have done, they need only worry about practicing to get better and then playing at a higher level each Saturday.  Amen.
