Matt Greene... anyone heard of him in these parts?

He was seen on the Red Wings' telecast Tuesday night.  Matt Greene, 24, of the Edmonton Oilers, a defenseman.  He's in his second season in the NHL.  And what most people don't know is that Greene is from Grand Ledge.  He injured his ankle in a collision Tuesday with the Wings' Dallas Drake and had to be helped from the ice.  No word on if he'll be sidelined or not.  Greene did not get recruited at Michigan State, but he did play three years at North Dakota.  His team made the NCAA tournament all three seasons and he was a captain one year.  He was the 44th pick in the 2002 draft, taken in the second round by Edmonton.  Now he's with the big club.  And when you think of mid Michigan athletes who've made the NHL, I'll bet darn few ever name Matt Greene of Grand Ledge to their list.

East Lansing High School is seeking two variances before building the addition to its 50-year old football stadium.  The school district has received one thus far-- a judge says the stadium need build only 27 stalls in the new bathrooms instead of 67.  Now a variance is sought to avoid adding a $150,000 elevator to a new press box to satisfy handicap accessible laws.  The total worth of the renovation will be $2.3 million when the project is completed, providing the second variance is eventually granted.

MSU women's basketball is ranked 18th in the nation in the first ESPN/USA Today poll.  For what it's worth, Duke (coached by former MSU coach Joanne P. McCallie), is ranked ninth.  Duke opens next week at Denver, hoping to repeat its 33-win total of a year ago under then coach Gail Goestenkohrs, who is now the coach at Texas.  By the way, tickets remain for the men's exhibition opener at 8pm Friday in the Breslin Center against Grand Valley State.
