It's not like I expected this to be a fun week. Ohio State is almost assuredly going to give us a serious beatdown Saturday. Losing to Ohio State is never fun. Losing to Ohio State 50-10 with an army of Buck-staches jeering us is going to be unbearable.
On top of the looming massacre, there's now a mini-exodus from the team. The mainstream media will probably play it up as "OMG, nobody wants to play for RichRod!" In actuality, it's a process many college teams go through at the end of the season, especially when a coaching change is involved. Guys realize they're never going to see the field in any meaningful way, so they move on to greener pastures. Here are the departing players:
Zion Babb (Soph)
A rarely-used receiver who apparently broke a team rule before the Northwestern game.
Jason Kates (Soph)
A backup defensive tackle who was fifth on the depth chart at best.
Artis Chambers (Soph)
A backup safety/linebacker hybrid who hadn't seen much time this year. His departure may hurt a bit with the loss of Brandon Harrison to graduation.
Sam McGuffie (Fr)
The freshman running back is by far the most talented and most hyped player on this list. There are rumors flying in both directions about him and Rodriguez has yet to make any official statement about him AFAIK. Oddly enough, I'm not all that concerned with McGuffie leaving. I think he's custom-built for this offense, but we have a lot of depth in the backfield. Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown and Michael Shaw are all coming back. Three recruits are coming in, including Teric Jones and Fitzgerald Toussaint, both 4-star players. We can handle the loss of McGuffie. Getting killed in front of 90,000 truckers Saturday, that's another matter.
