Eager eyes scanned the pieces of paper hanging on the windows of the front entrance of Pattengill Middle School, the sheets that held each student's fate for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Some children celebrated as they discovered who their teacher and classmates would be. Others hugged their friends as they approached the building, separated by three months of summer.
"Everyone's excited," said Dominic Carbone, a local business owner who volunteered to greet kids as they arrived Tuesday morning. "It's like the first day of a sporting season almost. They're all excited for the new year. They're all straight-A students and they all feel great about themselves."
Some parents joined their students in rejoicing the start of school, glad their kids could begin learning again and thankful for more time to run some errands. Others were more nervous as their children transitioned to a new school.
Superintendent Yvonne Caamul Canul greeted children in the front of the building before giving a brief address to the entire school in the gymnasium.
"You always have to keep your mind clear about why you're doing this," she said. "It's for the kids and for the families in Lansing. And if I stay in my office, I miss that opportunity to be energized by everybody in here."
