The stem cell proposal prohibits complying with internationally accepted research guidelines. There are no restrictions human embryonic stem cell research. UofM has 40 researchers working on them. They can work with any stem cells they choose and patients can donate their embryos. Michigan has restrictions on research on live embryos. Whether it's the International Society for Stem Cell Research, the National Academies of Sciences, or virtually every bioethics board in the world, their restrictions are greater than this proposal's. If passed, the proposal would "Prohibit state laws that prevent, restrict or discourage stem cell research" - including those keeping with with currently recognized research guidelines - or future ones. As for Vicky in Jackson - Embryonic stem cells cause cancer. Other stem cells have 85% patients off insulin per JAMA April 2007. Recruitment ongoing at ClinicalTrials.gov for Dr. Burts and other trials.
