John McCain said during a visit to one of Michigan's nuclear power plants that the nation needs more nuclear power to decrease its reliance on oil.
The Republican presidential candidate's visit Tuesday to DTE Energy Co.'s Fermi 2 plant came a day after Democratic rival Barack Obama spoke in Lansing about his energy plan.
Among Obama's ideas is getting 1 million 150-mile-per-gallon plug-in hybrids on the road within six years.
McCain wants to see 45 nuclear power plants built by 2030. He says that "if we really want to enable technologies of tomorrow like plug-in electric cars, we need electricity to plug into."
McCain is expected to return to Michigan on Aug. 13 for a pair of high-priced fundraisers in southeast Michigan.
